Monk in the Marketplace is the autobiography of Ray Simpson, founding guardian of the Community of Aidan and Hilda, much-loved author of books on Celtic spirituality, and a major influence on the new monastic movement across the world. Ray’s memoir charts human pain and God incidents in his childhood and college, baptisms of fire in industrial heartlands and multi-racial London, pioneering a Village of God at Bowthorpe, Norwich, the call to be a contemplative in the marketplace and to live without a salary, his co- founding of the Community of Aidan and Hilda, and twenty years as founder of the Celtic Christianity library and Open Gate Retreat House on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (‘the spiritual capital of England’).

An important book for our generation!
In the wake of a generation raised on Dobson’s teaching, Meredith Miller provides a positive alternative for nurturing faith in our children, and healing some of our own hurts as adults in the process. I think this book is vitally important for parents and ALL adults who work with children in a church or similar teaching context. It is practical and hopeful, grounded in research and sound theology. I bought an extra 8 copies so I could run a book club discussion group.

Not just a collection of essays...
...it is a summons, calling us to reckon with the industrial habits that are debasing our land, our communities, and ultimately ourselves. I love this book because it feels both prophetic and pastoral. It unsettles, but it also steadies. It names the crisis honestly, yet refuses despair. It reminds us that the alternative to a world-ending fire is not grand heroics but daily faithfulness—to soil, to neighbour, to limits, and to love. For anyone concerned about creation care, community, or the moral shape of modern life.

A very useful tool to live a more centred life...
...I've used lots of different journals and planners throughout my life, and am currently using this one along with three others as they all serve different purposes.
The daily, weekly and monthly rhythms serve to keep me grounded and anchored, ensuring my focus for that period of time is on Christ and His Kingdom.
I especially appreciate the daily structure, which takes you from Scripture (I use YouVersion's verse of the day), to pray, to thankfulness, to focus for the day.
A bargain at this price - well worth the investment!
